WiBE 3G static broadband service
« on: December 30, 2011, 04:02:37 PM »

Gentlefolk,

I thought you might be interested in a small WiBE survey I've done locally.
I used an inverter in my car to power the device which is described here:-

http://www.ruralbroadband.co.uk/3g-wibe-by-deltenna-with-rural-broadband-firmware.html

Test results are documented here:-

http://www.scribd.com/doc/76790433/All-Albury-WiBE-Items

The performance can vary quite widely without moving the device at all as you will see from the range of TBB speed tests I've done.
The upload speed is not limited as much as in ADSL systems.
The distance from the mast seems less important than the angle to the mast, the antenna angular position on the mast and a reasonably clear line of sight.

EDIT I understand an external unit with POE (Power Over Ethernet cable) is to be available next year. This should improve reception especially if the unit is mounted high on e.g. a chimney stack.

A WiBE device is clearly not going to compete with good land line services but it can be far better than no service at all.
If a mobile signal is available, it might be worth considering instead of a satellite service on costs and upload speeds.
Note not all mobile providers are offering 3G services yet.

Kind regards,
Walter

I have not taken in all the details but I think you should be congratulated for your experiments, Walter.  :clap2:
